Integrating Comprehensive Care Needs into Clinical Pathways
Drug prices are the focus of many people in health care, but no one is measuring the total cost of delivering the drugs to the patient. Getting a patient through chemotherapy
requires attention to their side effects and toxicities, and their life situations. Most practices and hospitals do this in a haphazard way, relying on the patient to call before they are sick enough to go to the hospital. The worst situation is when the patient is simply told to go to the emergency department.
There is a better way. An organized proactive process to keep patients healthier includes pathways that [incorporate] checking on patients proactively as well as managing the problems before they become severe. We must also remember that the people going through treatment face economic, social, family, and other problems, and pathways can manage those problems so our patients can focus on getting well.
