AIBD Poster Award Winner: Katherine Cates, MD

Dr Cates describes her award-winning poster on the use of anal pap smears to identify patients at high risk of developing anal cancer and advance them to high-resolution anometry.

Katherine Cates, MD, is gastroenterology fellow at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Hi, my name is Katherine Cates, and I'm a gastroenterology fellow at LSU, New Orleans, and I'm so excited to be at AIBD and to be given the award for the best of AIBD 2025 case reports. And I'm even more excited to share with you about our research project, the overlooked malignancy, anal cancer screening and inflammatory bowel disease.

We actually took 36 patients, and we scheduled them for colonoscopy, and before colonoscopy, and before rectal exam, which is very high of importance, we actually did an anal pap smear, and then we sent the pap smear off after colonoscopy. When we got those results back, out of the 36 patients that we chose to include in our project, we specifically found patients with high risk factors for anal cancer, including perianal Crohn's disease, HIV, HPV, which is incorporated into the 36 selection of patients.

So our next step was to establish a workflow at LSU to actually go to the office visit with a colorectal surgeon to set up for a high-resolution anoscopy procedure as the next step. Part of that workflow incorporates a colorectal surgery nurse practitioner and an office visit, which is very imperative and important part of our research because it allows the patient to ask the questions of what is an HRA or high -resolution anoscopy, and ultimately, what is a positive or abnormal anal pap smear? So that helped with compliance in getting our HRA results, and it ultimately kind of helped contribute to our data at the end of the study.
