Education Improves Shared Decision-Making in Food Allergy Care
A survey-based study found significant discordance between patients and clinicians regarding food allergy treatment familiarity, with education markedly improving patient confidence and shared decision-making (SDM).
“Discordance between food allergy HCPs and patients was observed around familiarity and satisfaction with treatments,” the investigators reported.
Among 470 patients and caregivers, fewer than 20% reported familiarity with FDA-approved treatments before education, compared with 75% after. Confidence in communicating with care teams increased from 47% to 90% (P<.001).
“Patient education can help improve their SDM involvement and self-management,” the authors concluded.
