At the 2026 Western Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Symposium, emerging clinical fellows in electrophysiology took center stage during the EP Fellows in Training Scientific Research Competition. The event—designed to spotlight research among first- and second-year electrophysiology fellows—showcased cutting-edge research ranging from clinical outcomes in complex patient populations to fundamental mechanisms of atrial remodeling. The abstracts were evaluated by an expert panel of judges, including Sana Al-Khatib, MD, MHS; Tina Baykaner, MD, MPH; Philipp Sommer, MD; and Rod Passman, MD, MSCE. Attendees gained insight into the future of AFib research from these 4 outstanding abstracts.

Presented by: Shohei Kataoka, MD, MD
“Atrial Cardiomyopathy Drives Stroke Risk Independent of Atrial Fibrillation: A Multi-Cohort Analysis”
Presented by: Matthew W Segar, MD
Third Place
“Association of Left Atrial Appendage Closure With Reduced Bleeding, Stroke, and Mortality In Patients With Liver Cirrhosis”
Presented by: Michel Abou Khalil, MD
Fourth Place
“Impact of Pre-operative Phone Calls on Post-operative Patient-Initiated Inquiry Following Electrophysiology Procedures”

Celebrating Tomorrow’s Leaders in EP Research
The EP Fellows Research Competition awards are intended to support current and future scientific research initiatives. Judged by leading faculty, the competition enriches the Western AFib Symposium experience and reinforces the vital role of fellows in advancing arrhythmia care. The top 4 fellows each receive a travel stipend, complimentary registration to attend the meeting, and the opportunity to present their research live.
Don’t miss our upcoming interviews with Dr Segar and Dr Kataoka!
