VA Invests $818 Million to Expand Housing and Support Services for Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded more than $818 million in grants to 235 organizations nationwide, a sweeping investment aimed at preventing and reducing homelessness among veterans and their families.

The funding, distributed through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, will provide critical resources, including housing support, health care access, financial planning, childcare, legal services, and transportation throughout fiscal year 2026.

“Supportive services like childcare, housing counseling and financial planning can be important catalysts for preventing or resolving homelessness,” said VA Secretary Doug Collins. “These grants will help bring crucial support to thousands of Veterans in need across the nation.”

The SSVF program, launched in 2012, was designed to address the urgent problem of veteran homelessness with a flexible, trauma-informed approach that prioritizes rapid housing solutions and prevention services. Since its inception, SSVF has focused on both rapidly rehousing veterans experiencing homelessness and preventing those at risk from losing their homes.

Rapid rehousing services funded through these grants will include housing navigation, temporary financial assistance for rent and utilities, and ongoing case management to help Veterans achieve long-term housing stability. Prevention services will provide similar supports for households at imminent risk of losing their homes, offering crisis resolution, financial aid for arrears, and resource connections to stabilize housing.

By combining housing assistance with wraparound services such as childcare and financial planning, the initiative aims to improve the long-term well-being of veterans and their families while reducing reliance on emergency shelters. For thousands of veterans across the country, these grants represent a lifeline to stability, dignity, and a secure home.
