CHAI and Joint Commission Partner to Launch AI Governance Guidance for Health Care
New guidance from the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) and The Joint Commission aims to help health care organizations safely and effectively manage the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in care delivery, according to a press release from The Joint Commission.
The partnership will produce playbooks to guide hospitals and health systems in setting up governance structures, monitoring AI tool performance, and building vendor partnerships. These efforts are essential but costly and complex to implement independently.
CHAI, founded in 2021, includes 3000 member organizations ranging from academic medical centers and rural hospitals to tech companies and startups. The group has already developed resources such as model cards and a registry of AI tools to support transparency and access. Now, their collaboration with The Joint Commission, which is an accrediting body for over 23 000 US health care organizations, will extend that work to standardized frameworks for responsible AI use.
As interest in AI's ability to ease administrative tasks grows, so do concerns about risks such as bias, inaccuracies, and declining performance. Addressing these issues requires ongoing oversight and costly infrastructure; according to CHAI’s executive director Brian Anderson, launching even a handful of AI models can cost health systems $1–2 million.
The upcoming playbooks will offer scalable guidance tailored to provider size and resources. For example, smaller hospitals might be advised to form lean governance teams and collaborate with larger referral centers. The first installment of the guidance is expected this fall, with a certification program to follow.
According to Dr Jonathan Perlin, CEO of The Joint Commission, the certification will build on the group’s 2023 Responsible Use of Health Data Certification and marks a key step in enabling trustworthy, scalable AI deployment in health care.
